This is an excerpt from Lewis Carrol's work "Alice in wonderland" and is a conversation between Alice and the Cat. It goes something like this:
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where–” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
“–so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation.
“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”
In case you thinking " WTF" (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday of course) ...read on.
We have come across many fascinating, well defined Statements of Purpose, Vision, Values and some really cool stuff like that. The one's who wrote the stuff take pride in it. The ones who are supposed to execute it seem to have a mix of guarded optimism, constructive indifference, genuine passion or just don’t care. Some just don’t know what it is supposed to mean-they missed the online orientation or it wasn’t emphasised well enough.
Somewhere along the way, when pressures and conflicting priorities pile up.. some stand fast to those principles, some don’t. The rationalizations are plenty. The point is, how many in your organization can you afford to have "going somewhere” while they pretend to hold a map, compass and lots of positive mental attitude?
Think about it- if a speeding aircraft’s nose were to be pointed just one degree off the intended course, it’s only a matter of time (and speed) before it goes "Somewhere Else". Is that a risk your organization, or you yourself can take?
If you talk to a man in a language he understands,
that goes to his head.
If you talk to him in his language,
that goes to his heart.
